"A New Bloom",
Jane Cochran and Jack Conklin
February 2007
This is an article discussing a great multicultural experience for her students. Sussanah Modin had her students learn about Finland Culture before they wrote to some students their, through a pen pale system. Here students had virtual tours of Finland and learn neat aspects of Finland culture. IT gave them the opportunity to learn web site tactics and also learn about different cultures. What method did Modin Use to maximize students learning? She used Blooms Taxonomy. Here, teachers can focus on students behavior, cognitive learning skills to reach their students More effectively. Blooms taxonomy gets teachers to ask deep questions making sure that students are thinking at a more profound level. What questions do students learn to ask themselves through Blooms Taxonomy? When you hit a road block what tactics do you usually use to help stay on track, again working with cognitive learning methods. What did you learn about your way of thinking that will help you in future lessons? again a way o teaching kids to learn through self reflection. This article was posted because it promoted multicultural activities and used 21st century technologies.

Virtual Schooling", by Niki Davis and Dale S. Niederhausen. This article discusses the changes that occur during the shift to virtual schooling for teacher and students. Why choose virtual schooling? It helps schools meet the standards presented in NCLB. Each student and teacher get connected with E-Learning material to become familiar with technological aides. Virtual schools have helped in crisis situations such as Hurricane Katrina, where displaced students were able to attend school through the web. Online learning is great because it gives children in remote areas the opportunity to get great lectures and projects through the internet. What are some examples of the Virtual School capabilities? Web CT provides access to a number of comrehensive Learning Materials, everything from syllubus to student produced resources and communication tools such as email. Also , virtual video confreences are available at most virtual schools, allowing students to have virtual office hours with their teachers. There are also projects that students are able to complete via the internet. I think that the virtual school is a great opportunity; however I wunder about the personal aspect of it. CHildren hardly being able to interact personally with their teachers. I think the persoanl face to face aspect of school is a great contribution to teacher students relationships. My teachers were my role models, and wanted to be around them and learn from them.

Project Based Learning Around the World
Kristen Weatherby
This article starts off by exciting the reader to take a tour of two distant Tallinn, Estonia and Hong Kong, China. In Estonia the govenrment made it a law that everyone had access to computers. As a result, the "Tiger's Leap Forward" was created to create a influx of computers into the shcools. What did "Tigers Leap Forward" do for public education in estonia? This gave them the opportunity to give each student access to project based learning programs via technology systems. It also begin a trend to get teachers more familiar with web resources for their students. Then, the journey continued to Hong Knog, 30 % of the population speaks English and all of the material in the education system has to be typed in English. Why do public schools in Hong Kong have to compete for students enrollment. Because students in Hong Kong have the choice of what school they awant to go. As a result, schools try to more desirable and make all their teachers IT savy.

Social Justice: Choice or Necessity, By Colleen Swain and David Edyburn
This is a great article that helps educators realize the potential danger when they do not allow all of their students to have full access and availability to the many forms of technology. Should funding for technology be distributed to all schools, making it a requirement to have these services available to all students? I strongly agree. The school environment should always be geared to helping students to become prepared for the interactive working world. Now more than ever professions are demanding their employees to know how to effectively use technology to lighten work load and usually help the company make larger profits. We are setting students up for failure if we do not make “Technology 101” as a class in the school setting. These courses should be held as mandatory not as electives, and within the curriculum the teacher should continually show the importance of learning these technology aides. I also believe that as the President Bush has endorsed the focus on Math and Sciences we need to focus our attention technology.
What is the effect of hindering some students from being able to learn or practice all the benefits of technology? This article showed how higher level school standards and almost all future employers will require the student to be proficient in technology use, so they are at a huge disadvantage when these technological resources are not taught or available. .
I also liked this article because it gave information about resources to help aides in technology and how it can better aide students with disabilities. This goes along with the section of the article which emphasizes ways teachers can use technology to be more effective in the classroom.

"From Toy to Tool" by Liz Kolb.
This is an interesting article about the use of cell phones. That is the last thing I thought I would here a teacher say. All my teachers hated cell phones in class. He is saying that they can be helpful for students to learn. I liked the idea of conducting interviews outside of the classroom so that the students could later listen to them. I like the idea of creating a file that talks about a certain author, for a book report, and the students can add audio to the work. That is a great idea. This can help the audio learner. I believe that is the best thing for these different programs, they are other resources to enhance the learning experience they are not the only thing. The concern is the protection policy. The students have to pay 12 dollars to have a protected password. Without this their information can be stolen or hampered with; however, this is being worked on. The question I have is how do we work to make sure that they are learning something with these types of projects? I think that the best way to see if the student is progressing with an audio bloger is to make a quiz on the fundamentals of the audio bog. Also, the students can take quizzes on the different audio presentations. The other question is how do administrators make sure that the audio that the kids obtain or make is safe for the classroom environment? The teacher will have a password that allows them to get into the site and monitor what is attached. This is a great idea.

Video in the age of participation
Glen Bull
I liked the international wildlife web cams at the waterholes of nature. That is neat. Discovery is a great resource to let you pull from a file of 40,000 clips to use for a specific instruction. I agree that this is a generation that is set on the use of technology. It is no longer the age of the orator rather the artist. WE need to have more access to video for the use of teaching. My question is how do we not go over board? How can we incorporate video, and also make it be effective. Well, the author seems to make it clear that this is an additional help aide for a specific subject. Videos online are not the basis rather they are the supplement. They create a picture for the kids to see, that can better help the student understand what is going on. The main segment of this article talks about Discovery Educators network, this allows teachers and students to use work for instruction. 70% of schools in the United States subscribe to this. It is neat to see how accessible these different forms of media are these days. What is the advantage of a multimedia library such as DEN.? The author shows us that the teachers like these videos because they are directly what you are looking for. It is the fast-forward version of a video.

Justin Hardman and David Carpenter, "Breathing Fire into 2.0"
This is an interesting article found on ISTE.org about the use of collaboration for teachers. This seems to go beyond the usual mass emails that take up all of your space on your account, making it hard to recognize a message other than the mass email. This discusses a system that can connect thousands of teachers to a site that can help them communicate better. There would seem to be an online electronic portfolio, also the use of classroom management aide. I think it is neat to see this program of inter connection for teacher. It is so necessary. I like that you can have a link to your own personal portfolio where other teachers can look at some assignments and or lesson plans that you have done. That is cool, something that I see myself doing in the years to come. Carpenter says, “it is as if each teachers file cabinet was open and the other teachers have access to all of their files”. I am sure that it is hard to be so open with other colleagues about your work. However, I think that collaboration like this is so necessary. The other neat link is the ability to have access to communication with parents with something like Dragon net. It seems like training in Dragon net will be a great tool to help students grow. Is there ability for growth and expansion within a system like dragon net? The authors assure the reader that there is at the end of the article. They say what seems to be a single file sharing and calendar for an international school system has become world famous. After reading the article what seems to be the main use of a system like dragonet? The aide of Classrooms management, curriculum development, and the sharing of electronic portfolios. How can you use this system to teach students. Well after school you can look at it and find some notes from another teacher about a subject that you are going over. You might find a better way to present the information this way.

Finding new ways to connect:
Professors adjust their methods to reach technology-savvy generation.
By: Eleanor Yang Su of The San Diego Union Tribune

This was an interesting article about the use of technology for the Y generation. Technology is a common issue among College students these days, for everyone seems to be dependent on it to function in life. This article was neat because it got you into the life of teachers and students from UCSD who are using technology such as Instant messenger, email, myspace, ipods, all while trying to get good grades on their course work. The answer: Multitasking. The debate about multitasking got me to think if Multi tasking is a positive thing. To Neuro-Scientist, it is not beneficial. I really like the use of the “Clicker” in the classroom. That would be so neat to have in the classroom. Gordon Clanton, sociology teacher at SDSU, had an interesting thought about the use of technology, saying that it’s, “dumbing down the instruction”. This got me to think, is technology good for only some classes? I think the answer can be found in the next paragraph. Here, Diana Oblinger who works for, Educause a non profit organization that promotes the use of technology in classrooms, believes that effective technology use is when it engages the student. This makes since, there needs to be some type of engaging reflective work for any assignment to be effective. The other question is how we can use the clicker in a history classroom. I think this device can be so useful in the years to come, especially for quick interactive lecture discussions. You ask the students a question and they can confidentially answer it using the clicker. That is so neat. I hope the school I work for will have $ in the budget to afford those. :)

This is where I will post intro letter

My name is Michael Joseph Collins. I am originally from El Cajon, California, in the East County of San Diego. I have been married to my beautiful wife Karina for 3 years, this last December. My wife and I met at a bible study in La Mesa, California in 2001. We got married in 2003. After the wedding we moved to Davis, California so my wife could finish her Bachelor degree. After that we moved to Carlsbad, where my wife is from originally, and have lived there ever since. I have a very loving and supportive family. My parents raised me with my brother Chris in El Cajon. I have a half brother and sister through my dad’s previous marriage. Their name is Scott and Allison. One unique thing about my siblings is that we all get along pretty well; they are my friends. I went to school at Vista Grande Elementary School, and then I went to Montgomery Middle School. I later went to Hillsdale Middle School, and finished at Valhalla High School (Graduating Class of 200).
My first introduction to computers was my freshman year in high school. I took an intro to computers class there. Before that I hadn’t had much exposure to computers. All of my family had not been into technology that much so I wasn’t around it. I have a PC and have been able to get used to that over the years. I depend on technology with my computer to do homework and check emails. I have a cell phone that I depend on as well. Just about all of my communication is via technology, so I would say on a daily basis I need technology to function.
Reflective teaching and diversity are the words that stand out when I read our mission statement. To me a great teacher is one that will learn to reflect and assess their teaching and comparing it to the students learning. This to me is a great teacher. Learning different ways to assess the effectiveness of your teaching will be hard for me because there are so many students and you want to make sure that you’re giving them all the opportunity to learn. Diversity is such an important thing to be learning about in California as it continues to grow and become more diversified. It will be vital to be in a school that prides itself on learning and teaching diversity.
